Liquid Sunshine
Liquid sunshine cascades down the windowsill
Pooling on the patchwork-print linoleum floor
Bathing the people chatting on the cracked black vinyl stools
That line the long faux granite counter
Trailing the entire window side
Of this mom-and-pop restaurant
Sticky smoke wafts from the kitchen door
Half full coffee glasses clink
And a large fan hums sluggishly
Its blades disturbing the thick summer air
The smell of grease and eggs and coffee
Is heavy in the room
But nobody minds
Because the food is good
A woman sits by herself in a booth across from mine
She swirls the cappuccino dregs
At the bottom of her cup
